- WHY Magistrate
Why You Should Elect Me for Jessamine County District 1 Magistrate
I am running for Magistrate because I believe the people of District 1 deserve a representative who works tirelessly, listens with respect, and serves with integrity. Being retired allows me to dedicate the time and energy needed to focus fully on this office and the needs of our community.
For over 40 years, I owned and operated a successful business in Fayette and Jessamine County. During that time, we never received a single complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and even our competitors often recognized the quality of service we provided. I understand the importance of accountability, fairness, and treating people right.
Since 1998, I have had the privilege of serving as a deacon at Wellington Church, where I learned the value of humility, service, and responsibility. My decisions are guided not only by the people I represent, but also by my faith and the values that have shaped my life.
In recent years, I have become more active in the Republican Party of Jessamine County and other local organizations. I am not afraid to speak up when something is wrong, and I believe that good leadership means weighing all perspectives before making a decision. Years of experience—and the lessons that come with them—have given me the common sense and sound judgment necessary to represent you well.
I am committed to being a strong voice for District 1. I will work hard for every resident to help ensure our county remains a place we are proud to call home. I would be honored to earn your trust and your vote as your next Magistrate.
- Biography
Harry Van Epps
I was born in Davenport, Iowa in 1949 and grew up in Burlington, Iowa where I graduated from high school in 1967. During those years, I lettered in football, wrestling, and baseball, served as president of the Varsity Club, and was proud to help lead my baseball teams to a 2nd-place state finish as a sophomore and 3rd place as a senior.
As the first in my family to earn a college degree, I attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa, where I served as Freshman Class President and played both football and baseball. Our football team competed in the Sterling Silver Bowl in both of my years there. I continued my education at Northeast Missouri State (now Truman State University), earning degrees in Health and Physical Education and Mathematics. I also played baseball and served on the Student Union Board, where I met my wife of 53 years, Dorothy.
After graduation, I began my teaching and coaching career at Ft. Zumwalt Junior High in O’Fallon, Missouri, teaching 8th grade math and coaching football and wrestling. In 1974, I accepted a position with Van Buren Community School in Keosauqua, Iowa, where I taught Algebra and advanced mathematics while coaching football, wrestling, and softball.
In 1979, I transitioned to the business world, joining Princeton Industries Corporation in Princeton, Indiana. Over the next decade, I worked my way up to District Manager and later Regional Manager, relocating to Lexington, Kentucky. In 1991, Dorothy and I started our own business, Bumblebee Marketing and Fundraising, which we successfully operated until the COVID-19 pandemic.
Along the way, Dorothy and I were blessed with two wonderful children, who today are strong Christians and active, productive citizens. In 2011, we moved to Nicholasville, where we quickly became involved in local community activities and organizations.
Now, I want to give back in an even greater way—by serving Jessamine County. With my background in education, business leadership, and community involvement, I am committed to helping make Jessamine County the envy of the state.
